Moated castle with a 700 year history

The Hardenberg Palace is an old moated castle, which was built by the masters of Hardenberg in the middle of the 13th-century. This stately building encompassed a two-winged palace with a main tower, surrounded by a frontal wall, four round peels and a gate tower with a drawbridge.
Moats and pond facilities, which were fed from the Hardenberger stream offered additional also security from uninvited guests.

Still in the 15th-century a new three-level castle building was being constructed.
Inside the palace were a hall, eight chambers, a school room, a chapel, servant's chambers, an armoury and two grain lofts.
In addition below ground connections, so-called casemates were set up in the 17th-century. These connected the four towers to respond faster in case of an attack.

Numerous fires and the constant change of castle owners formedthe present shape of the complex.
